GM currently follows the New York State nutrition guidelines for medically tailored meals (MTM) to ensure they effectively address the needs of individuals with certain medical conditions. These guidelines are based on the following key principles:
Alignment with National Standards:
- New York State’s MTM guidelines generally align with national standards, such as those established by the Food is Medicine Coalition (FIMC) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- These standards emphasize the importance of providing meals that are:
- Nutritionally complete: Meeting the individual’s needs for macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats), micronutrients (vitamins, minerals), and fluids.
- Tailored to medical conditions: Addressing specific dietary restrictions and needs related to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and HIV/AIDS.
- Prepared with high-quality ingredients: Using fresh, wholesome ingredients and avoiding excessive processed foods, added sugars, and unhealthy fats.
Registered Dietitian Oversight:
- A key component of New York’s MTM guidelines is the involvement of Registered Dietitians (RDs) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs).
- GM has an RDN on staff to review and modify all recipes before use to ensure proper ingredients are used for medically tailored meals.
- GM uses ESHA, a nutritional software product, services, and databases that is recognized as the industry’s top choice for food and supplement formulation, recipe development, labeling, nutritional analysis, and regulatory compliance.
